Stylish and Sun-Smart Summer Essentials

 In Health

You’ve got friends, family and some well-deserved time off work. What are some other essentials this holiday season? Whether you’ve planned an action-packed getaway or a chill session in your hometown, you’re going to need sun protection and outfits that’ll help you handle the heat. Here are our top five must-haves for a safe, fun and stylish summer!

Hat

Caps, wide brimmed straw hats, visors – so many head protectors to choose from! Ideally, your hat should cover as much surface area as possible, so a wide brimmed hat is great as it protects your face, ears, nose and (if it’s a super floppy hat) even your shoulders. We love The Iconic for its huge selection of hats, and Well Made Clothes for their ethical fashion catalogue.

Sunglasses

Our sensitive eyes need adequate protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Glare and reflection from water, glass, etc. can also harm our eyes, which is why sunglasses are a worthwhile investment. Getting sunglasses from the $2 shop may have been acceptable when we were kids, but now we know how important it is to have good sunglasses with proper protection.

Not only do sunglasses defend our eyes, but they look pretty great on too! Girls Money Club has a selection of designer vintage frames that have the power to transform anyone into a movie star. If you need prescription sunglasses, Clearly has deals on their online store.

SPF

You should have sunblock with you at all times – keep a bottle in your bathroom cabinet, your glovebox and your bag. Get a large pump bottle for home and a small one for when you’re on-the-go. Choose sunblock that is at least SPF 30, and re-apply every two hours.

Our favourite SPF products are PCA Weightless Sunscreen and Invisible Zinc. PCA is an all-over SPF 45 shield that has been awarded the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation, and Invisible Zinc is an SPF 50 face and body sunscreen that contains zinc oxide, a natural mineral reflector. Both of these sunscreens are available at Claris Group.

Togs

Get cool the natural way – by going for a swim! Togs are a must in New Zealand’s climate and geography, and we love checking out new swimwear by clever local designers. Malola Swim has cheeky, colourful designs, and of course Lonely has another beautiful line out this summer.

Just remember to cover yourself in sunscreen before going out in your togs, and re-apply after going for a swim. Try to find shade and try to avoid too much sun exposure between 10am and 3pm, as that’s when UV light is at its strongest.

Slides

Jandals are great, but slides are so much more comfortable and perfect for sliding around the poolside, or meandering to the fish and chip shop after a dip in the ocean. Check out these black leather slides from The Commoners, or these delicious Kashiba burgundy slides from Good as Gold. Give your feet some breathing space (and don’t forget the sunblock so you don’t get sandal tans!)

Have fun this summer, and don’t forget to book in a skin check and mole check so you can truly relax with a peace of mind. Our skin doctors are dedicated to helping you stay healthy, so you can enjoy this summer and many more to come.
